Frank C. Brophy, Jr., 74, died peacefully at his Paradise Valley home on June 22, 2004 after a lengthy struggle with cancer. A longtime Valley resident, Frank grew up in Phoenix.
He was a graduate of St. Francis Grammar School in Phoenix and Portsmouth Abbey School in Rhode Island. He graduated from Notre Dame University in 1951 and earned his law degree from the University of Arizona in 1956.
He was a staff attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. from 1957 to 1959. Frank returned to Phoenix to join the law firm of Ryley, Carlock and Applewhite in 1959, where he became a partner. While at the firm he had a diverse practice.
Among his many accomplishments, he perfected the water rights for the Planet Ranch on the Bill Williams River before it was sold to the City of Scottsdale. Frank retired from the firm in 1976 to establish his own private law practice.
He served in the Army during the Korean War. Frank was the grandson of Mrs. William Henry Brophy, who in 1928 established the Brophy College Preparatory and Brophy Chapel.
Throughout his life Frank worked and relaxed at his family's historic Babacomari Ranch in southern Arizona.
Always active in community affairs with a kind and compassionate heart, Frank helped found the Villa Montessori School, served on the Madison School Board, and actively participated in the Arizona Center for Law in the Public Interest, the Pioneer Living History Museum, Camelback Village Association, Town of Guadalupe and Valley Big Brothers.
A lifelong learner, an avid reader, and writer of prose, Frank was much admired for his wit, depth of knowledge, and his ability to make people from all walks of life comfortable. He retained lifelong passions for sailing, hiking, and research, especially on Arizona and the Brophy family's roots in Ireland. In 1959 Frank joined The Arizona Club (which started 108 years ago) in downtown Phoenix, where he especially enjoyed the Round Table Lunch Group discussions and friendships formed.
A profound family man, he will be missed by his extended family and countless friends. Frank is survived by his wife of 23 years, Anna Andreini-Brophy; his brothers Blake (Dorie) and Rory (Bridget); his sisters Alice McChesney, Sallie Goodman (Jerry) and Kate Brophy; by daughters Sallie Najafi (Francis), Francesca Brennan (Steve), Fiona Hales (Tom), and Christina Brophy; by grandchildren Blaise and Julia Najafi, Chase, Cullen and Blake Brennan, Isabelle and Lauren Hales; by stepchildren Jane Kunde (Michael), Gary Wollman (Julie) and Jeffrey Wollman; and by step-grandchildren Lara, Natasha, Chad and Cody Wollman; by brother-in-law Robert Levy; and by mother- and father-in-law Ralph and Joan Caputo. Daughter Julia, brother Bill and brothers-in-law John McChesney and Richard Levy predeceased him.
A graveside service for the interment of Frank's cremains will be held on Saturday at 10:30 am October 2nd at Saint Francis Cemetery, 48th and Oak Streets. Donations are being made in Frank's honor to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower, Phoenix 85014, or to The Frank C. Brophy, Jr. Scholarship Book Fund, Brophy Peparatory, 4701 N.
