She died Sept. 29, 1998, at her home. She was born Sept. 3, 1902, in Lander, to Archie and Alice (Cyphert) Carter. She attended school in Lander and graduated from Lander Valley High School in 1923. She then attended summer school at the University of Oregon in Portland.
He father was killed prior to her birth in an oil field explosion. Her mother died when she was 15. She then lived with her aunt until maturity. Her grandfather drilled the first oil well in Wyoming.
She met Herman French in the oil fields north of Rawlins in 1926. They were married March 23, 1927. They resided in Rawlins, Midwest, Hanna, and then moved to Laramie in 1944. During that time, they had six sons and one daughter.
She joined the Order of Eastern Star, Lakota Chapter No. 38 in Midwest in 1927 and was a member of the Snowy Range Chapter No. 45 in Laramie at the time of her death. She was also a member of AARP and the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her sons, Robert French of Brevard N. C., Norman French of Cheyenne, Herb French of Newcastle, Howard French of Cedar Mountain, N. C., Joe French of Cheyenne; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Violet C. Sherlock of Lander and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Harold; her daughter, Lillian; two sisters; one brother; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
