Virginia Ruth McConnell, age 83, of Harrisburg passed away at 2:30 PM, Friday, August 17, 2012 at her residence.

Virginia was born in Harco on February 17, 1929, to the late Harry and Ruth (Allen) Melton. After moving to town to live in the Dorrisville Community and growing up there, she met and married Eugene McConnell on August 11, 1951 and he survives. She is also survived by three daughters: Carol and husband Steve Wallace of Thompsonville, IL.; Sue and husband Stan Stokes of Eldorado; and Jeanie and husband Richard Vinyard of Harrisburg. Four granddaughters: Stephanie Wallace, Amanda Stokes, of Harrisburg; Elizabeth and husband Adam Hughes of Eldorado; and Megan and husband Brian Sinks of Evansville, IN and two grandsons: Johnathan Vinyard of Stephenville, TX and Aaron and wife Autumn Vinyard of Harrisburg. She has five great-grandchildren: Skyler, Gavin and Rachel Vinyard of Stephenville, TX; Brooklyn and Nathan Hughes of Eldorado. Her niece: Debra and husband Dave McClellan of McFarland, WI and great-niece: Katie McClellen of Lodi, WI

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son: Edward Gene "Eddie Gene" and her brother: Henry "Buck" Melton.

Virginia was a member of the Galatia United Methodist Church. Living most of her life in the Lone Oak Community, she worked tirelessly for the Lord. She served as a Sunday School teacher, VBS teacher, piano player at both Lone Oak Methodist Church and then at Galatia United Methodist Church until her health wouldn't allow her to do so any longer. She was also a very active member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Beulah Holiness Church Camp in Eldorado for many years. She was an example of God's love and grace to everyone who knew her.

Funeral service will be at 2 PM, Monday, August 20, 2012 at Reed Funeral Chapel. Rev. Buddy Peyton and Rev. Jeff Rush officiating, burial will follow in Raleigh Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 AM to service time, at Reed Funeral Chapel. The family ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Galatia United Methodist Church, Beulah Holiness Camp or Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
