Henry H. Shields, son of Robert and Margaret Emert Shields, was born April 20, 1817 and died Feb 26, 1891. He resided in Cades Cove, Tennessee, within what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He was twice married, first to Martha Oliver, by whom he had eleven children. She died following childbirth in 1864, and in 1870 he was married a second time to Emily Adams. He was a farmer by occupation.

During the Civil War, Henry served with several of his neighbors in the pro-union Home Guard for Cades Cove. The Home Guard defended Cades Cove from Confederate raiders from North Carolina. In late 1864, during one of those skirmishes, Henry was wounded, and his left arm was rendered almost useless.
