Mary T. (McNelis) Barnes, 85, of Hollidaysburg died surrounded by her loving family on Saturday at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of William and Ethel (Warner) McNelis. On Dec. 5, 1946, in Hollidaysburg, she married Clyde F. Barnes, who preceded her in death on Feb. 7, 2007, after 60 years of marriage.
Surviving are two daughters: Catherine Stapelfeld and husband, Ben, of Duncansville, Holly O'Connor and husband, Denny, of Hollidaysburg; and two sons: Dr. Patrick Barnes and wife, Mary, of Hollidaysburg and Dr. Michael Barnes and wife, Beth, of Westminster, Colo. She had 10 grandchildren of whom she was very proud including: Rebecca Barnes and husband, Rob, of Boulder, Colo., Dr. Brad Barnes and wife, Stephanie, of Durham, N.C., Dr. Mark Barnes and wife, Marcia, of Hollidaysburg, Erin Borzellino and husband, Nick, of New Rochelle, N.Y., Ben Stapelfeld and wife, Christina, of Duncansville, Clark Stapelfeld and wife, Annie, of Duncansville, Kelly Padamonsky and husband, Bill, of Altoona, Catherine Richards and husband, Joe, of Charlottesville, Va., Michael O'Connor of Hollidaysburg and Patrick Barnes of Denver, Colo. She was blessed with 14 great-grandchildren: Meghan Barnes, Benny and Corie Stapelfeld, Giorgio, Catherine and Emilia Borzellino, Colin, Clare and William Padamonsky, Samantha and Andrew Barnes, Anna Barnes and James and Winston Stapelfeld. She is also survived by sisters: Susie Mock, Nancy Brumbaugh, Sally Hancock and Margaret McNelis; brothers: Hugh and William McNelis; and sisters-in-law: Ruth Ann Barnes and Janet McNelis.
She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, James Stapelfeld; a brother, John McNelis; an infant sister and brother; and daughter-in-law, Anne E. Barnes.
Mary Teresa graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 1945. She retired as a bookkeeper for Hollidaysburg Borough after 25 years of service. She had also served as a local registrar for 49 years. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary Church in Hollidaysburg.
She enjoyed flower gardening, cooking large meals for her family and keeping up with the day-to-day activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Sorge Funeral Home Inc., Hollidaysburg, where a vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church. Committal will be at New St. Mary Cemetery.
