Ralph Edwin Hill was born near Long Pine in Brown County, Nebraska, the fifth child of Charles Leslie Hill and Lana Dubois Mapes Hill. After the unexpected death of Charles from typhoid fever in 1907, Lana and the children moved to the Moon Lake area of Brown County, where Lana's brother Robert Mapes had homesteaded.

On October 1, 1922, Ralph married Nora Bell Clark, a neighbor girl who was the daughter of another homesteader. Ralph and Nora established a cattle ranch and had three children: Charles Leslie Hill, Harold E. Hill, and Cleona Mae Hill Allen. Ralph and Nora were divorced in about 1947.

Ralph married Nellie (--?--) in about 1948, and this marriage ended in divorce. In about 1955, Ralph married Evaline Marie Moore and adopted three of her children from a previous marriage (Rose, Donald, and Robert.) Ralph and Evaline were divorced in about 1965. In about 1966, Ralph married Mary E. Manley, a widowed lady from Texas.

During the mid-1930s, on the ranch at Moon Lake in Brown County, Ralph broke his back in a hayfield accident. As a result, he was partially paralyzed for the rest of his life and he left ranching. During the time he was married to Evalene, he owned and operated several motels in small Kansas towns. Later, he ran a shoe repair shop in Chanute, Kansas.
