One of 13 children of Alice J. Smith and William Cunningham.

In the 1910 Federal Census of Watonga, Blaine County, Oklahoma, he and his widowed mother were living with his older brother and his wife and children. The household included: William W Cunningham, age 39, married once for 9 years, born in Iowa to parents from Ohio, a farmer; Ada G, age 34, married once for 9 years, born in Iowa to a father from new York and a mother from Iowa; William M, age 8; John W, age 4; Edna A, age 1 1/12; Pleny R Mitchell, a hired man; Alice J Cunningham, age 64, widowed, seven living children of 14 born, born in Ohio to a father from Pennsylvania and a mother from Ohio; and Benjamin V, age 20, born in Kansas to parents from Ohio.

He married Goldie Anna Hixenbaugh on January 11, 1916 in Summit, Ohio. Goldie was born May 31 1897, and was the daughter of Lillie Hamilton and Frank Hixenbaugh.

When he registered for the World War I draft, he was living in Blaine County, Oklahoma. He reported that he had been born in Hazelton, Kansas and that he was self employed as a farmer. He reported that he was married and he claimed exemption from the draft because he had kidney trouble.

When he registered for the World War II draft in 1941, he was living on West A Street in Watonga, Oklahoma. He was self employed and reported H S Cunningham as the person who would always know where he was. He reported his birthdate as September 11, 1889 in Barber County, Kansas.

He and his wife Edna appear in the 1930 Federal Census of Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri. Ben was age 40 and had married at age 26. Alma was age 25 and had married at age 23. Ben had been married to Goldie prior to his marriage to Alma. Ben was born in Kansas to parents from Ohio and was working as a truck driver. Alma was born in Oklahoma to a father from Missouri and a mother from Iowa.

The couple appears in the 1940 Federal Census of Watonga, Blaine County, Oklahoma. Ben was age 50, born in Kansas, had completed 8th grade and was working in a tire repair shop. Alma was 35, had an 8th grade education, and was a housewife.
