Found in The State 17 September, 1899: Mr. George W. Parker breathed his last about 4 o'clock yesterday morning after a long and painful illness. For more than a year his health has been steadily failing and for several months his condition has been absolutely hopeless. Mr. Parker was born in this county and almost the whole of his life was spent here. He was about 55 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Parker served gallantly in the Confederate service during the civil war. He was in the artillery branch of the service. After the was was over, Mr. Parker returned to Columbia and started life anew as a clerk. After a while he branched out into mercantile business for himself. later he became the cashier of Scott's bank, at that time a well known local institution. Mr. Parker finally went into the real estate and brokerage business which he conducted with marked success until a few years ago when he suffered reverses and retired from active business. Mr. Parker was for a number of years a member of the Richland board of county commissioners. Mr. Parker was a Mason of considerable prominence. He leaves a widow and five children, two daughters and three sons. The funeral services are to be held at the family residence in Waverly at 4 o'clock this afternoon, the remains being interred at Elmwood. The following gentlemen will act as pallbearers: A. M. Boozer, J. S. Campbell, J. F. Walker, J. S. Muller, D. Gambrill and Wm. H. Lyles.
