Henry was the son of William Seal and Eliza Owen. His father owned a distillery on the banks of Big Cedar Creek. As a child, Henry was abducted from his father's cabin by a band of Natives when William refused to sell them alcohol. The neighbors organized a rescue party, which overtook the kidnappers near Indianapolis. They were able to secure his release by offering trinkets to the Natives.

Henry became the manager of the distillery at age nineteen. After his marriage to Lydia Myers, Henry and his wife farmed together and sold their produce at the market in Cincinnati, Ohio. They sent the whiskey to market in New Orleans by raft down the Mississippi River. Henry served as justice of the peace from 1862 to 1870. He was a member of the Universalist Church.
