Steven P. "Steve" Smith, 57, of Parsons died at 1:25 a.m. Thursday, Aug 16, 2012, at the Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.
He was born on July 1, 1955, at Parsons to Paul and Glenda (Pierce) Smith. He grew up in Parsons and lived a few years in Harrisonville, Mo. He was active in Boy Scouts and "Up with People" in his youth. He attended Parsons Schools and graduated from Parsons High School in 1973. He also later graduated from Labette Community College with a degree in fire science.
He worked briefly at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant before he went to work at the city of Parsons for the rest of his career. he worked in the sewer, fire and water departments. He retired in 2008. He currently worked part time at O'Reilly's Auto Parts in Parsons.
Steve had several hobbies and was very creative and artistic in them. He enjoyed woodworking, blacksmithing, taxidermy and foundry work. He would sometimes even make his own tools He had a great sense of humor, was helpful to those in need, and loved visiting with people. He donated several old water gauges from the old water treatment plant to the Parsons Historical Museum. he attended the Central Avenue Christian Church in his youth.
He married Jennifer Just in July 1973 at Parsons. They later divorced. He then married Colette Holes. They later divorced. He married Laura Kinsch on Sept 23, 2006, in Parsons. She survives of the home.
In addition to his wife, Laura, Steve is survived by his son Mike Smith and his wife Brandel, of Tulsa; his daughter, Becky Davis and her husband, John, of Owasso, Okla; his stepson, Shane Madore and his wife, Savannah, of Parsons; his stepdaughter Amanda Cadle and her husband, Pat, of Independence; his grandchildren, Anthony and Mercedes Tennyson, Rachael David, Alex and Travis smith; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; stepgrandchildren, Emma and Zoey Madore, Jackson, McKenzie, Matt, and Miranda Cadle and Kyle Johnson; his sister Sandy Bell and her husband tim, of Cherryvale; his nephews, Brian and Dan Smith, Jeremy Bell; his niece, Brittiny Weber; and several brother and sister in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Gary Smith; and his grandparents.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
