Helen Elnora McGowen, 99, of New Castlem went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, Aug. 16,2012, at Glen Oaks Health Campus.
She was born Apr. 4,1913, in Elkart Co.,IN a daughter of the late Albert and Maude (Clindaniel) Davis.
Helen was a 1931 graduate of LaPaz High School and earned a degree in elementary education from Manchester College, North Manchester, IN. She was a devoted teacher for 18 1/2 years, teaching grades one through four at LaPaz Elementary. Together,she and her husband owned and operated a spearment farm and Sprig-O-Mint Golf Course near, Bremen,IN.
She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Bremen,IN. and attended the First Christian Church and Church of Christ,both in New Castle. She was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association, National Education Association and the Order of the Eastern Star. After retirement she attended Bible Study Fellowship and was a volunteer tutor at Westminster Center.
She is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Howard) Pruim of New Castle;two grandchildren, Lori Newby of New Castle and Jeffrey (Lisa) Pruim of Carmel;five great-grandchildren, Sarah Jett, Isaac Jett, Jacob Newby, Elliott Pruim and Kaitlynn Pruim; a brother, Dale Davis and a sister, Thelma Rader.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Vernus LaMar McGowen.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19,at Bremen Municipal Cemetery with Rev. Thomas L. Sproles officiating.
