He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Harold Lee and Senia White Lee; half-sister, Gertrude Mayfield; sisters, Velma Lee Huling and Evelyn Lee Crockett; brother, James Harold Lee; and sister-in-law, Alyce Hood Gibbs. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Helen Hood (Polly) Lee; son, Lloyd Dewey (Buddy) Lee, Jr., and wife Lisa, grandchildren, Adam and Ashley; son Dr. Richard Thomas Lee, and wife Pam, grandchildren Lindsay and Stephanie; sister, Dorthea Lee Merrill; sister-in-law Evelyn Hood Muldowny; and several nieces and nephews. Dewey was a 1946 graduate of Young High School, was voted by his classmates as "Mr. Young High School" in 1946, excelled in sports, and was captain of the football team his senior year. A football scholarship to Carson-Newman College gave him the opportunity to be the first in his family to attend college, and he excelled in sports there as well, playing center, linebacker, and punter; he was co-captain of the 1949 squad, and he was Vice-President of his 1950 senior class. He later received a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Tennessee. He began a teaching career at Harrison-Chilhowee Academy in 1950, where he was also the head football coach, and he was hired by the Knoxville City School System in 1952 to teach and coach football at South High School. He later became the principal of Mountain View Elementary School and, in 1958, principal of Beaumont Elementary/Elmwood Special Educational School, the largest elementary school and the only special educational school in Knoxville at the time. He was named "Knoxville City School System Principal of the Year" in 1967. In the 1970's he coached church-league softball teams at the Meridian ball field. A gentle but firm disciplinarian, he had an iron-clad work ethic, and he emphasized academic achievement and dignified sportsmanship. His nature was to encourage, and he instilled values of teamwork, humility, fair play, and respect for opponents and referees. He was the founder of Lee Appliance Rentals, locating coin laundries over East Tennessee, and he taught his sons the value of hard work and self-reliance. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. The family extends a special word of thanks to Dr. Kenneth Reese, Dr. Spencer Hinds, Dr. Ronald Yatteau, and the home health care nurses and Hospice workers involved in his care. The family will receive friends Friday, August 17, 2012 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Hwy. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2012 in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, with the interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
