The son of Jacob & Elizabeth Smith (Good) Hoffman, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his parents in Centre Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 11" tall and had black hair and black eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 5 as a private with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
He married Catherine Alice Lickel in 1866 and fathered Alice Virginia (b. 02/14/67 - married John Weldon), Lewis Amos (b. 12/10/68), Elizabeth S. (b. @1869), Harry Orvis (b. 09/01/73), Susannah Pane (b. 11/11/74), William Musser (b. 12/12/76), Sadie Caroline (b. 02/24/78 - married William Weldon), Jacob Wesley (b. 06/01/82), Murray Franklin (b. 10/??/84), and Orville Edward (b. 08/12/86).
His organizational pension index lists his date of death as September 22, 1925.
