Her family moved to Texas before and during the days of the Republic of Texas and were of hearty pioneer stock. Thomas J. Christian, the uncle of her father by the same name, was scalped and killed by Indians in 1833. The event is documented by a historical marker.
Based upon the marriage license for her parents on file in the Wayne County, Kentucky Clerk's Office, her father was Thomas J. Christian and her mother was Jemima Jane Tuttle Christian Phelps. Her father died in 1858 and her mother later married Samuel Phelps.
