He was born on Sept. 18, 1924, in Bruce Crossing, son of the late Albert and Sophie (Johnson) Mattson. He attended local schools and worked at various jobs before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the service, he moved to Detroit, where he had various jobs and mastered drywall construction, working for Custom Drywall.
On March 14, 1953, Harry married Rose Lervic, and they made their home in Detroit. In 1975, they moved back to Bruce Crossing, where he built a new house and continued to work in the woods and carpentry until he retired. Harry was a member of the Henry A. Holappa VFW Post 9345 in Bruce Crossing. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and pitching horseshoes. All who knew him will remember his smile and sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife, Rose, of 59 years; a son, Gerald (Sharon) Mattson; three grandchildren, Melissa Mattson, Anthony Mattson and Andrew Mattson; a great-granddaughter, Rose Eliina; a brother, Reino (Sandy) Mattson; a sister, Elaine Small; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Mattson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo and Lawrence; a sister, Lila Kamariainen; and two nieces, Karen Lind and Evelyn Kamariainen.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. EDT on Friday, Aug. 17, at the Wandersee Funeral Home in Bruce Crossing, with the Rev. Jesse Aho officiating.
Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery with military honors presented by the Ontonagon County Veterans Association and VFW Post 9345.
