Two of the sons listed above, William and Alexander, were in the Civil War and both were killed per research of Sarah Belle McDonald Fletcher, daughter of Benjamin Franklin McDonald a son of Annice McDonald. Sarah Belle had an interest in family history. She researched and wrote a GENEALOGICAL DIRECTORY entitled McDonald - Jackson and Associated Families of Scotland, North Carolina, Alabama and Texas, compiled by Mrs. Omar L. Fletcher, Temple, Texas; presented to the heads of each family branch at the ninth annual reunion of the McDonald - Jackson and associated families, June second, Nineteen-Hundred Fifty-Seven, at Temple, Texas. There is a copy maintained in the Temple Public Library, Temple, Texas.

Ann McDonald age 65, is listed as head of household # 794 on the 1870 Pike County, Rock Mill Post Office, Alabama census living in the household is son-in-law Noah Turner, age 22 and daughter Martina McDonald Turner age 20.

A hand-me-down story:
Shortly after the 1850 census, tragedy struck the Angus A. McDonald family. Angus had fought a forest fire for many hours and had fallen asleep from apparent exhaustion when a burning tree fell on him. Angus was killed and left a young family for Annice McDonald to rear by herself. Annice Ussery McDonald lived on the homeplace until her youngest son, Benjamin, decided to move to Texas in 1877. Annice then moved in with her daughter, Jane Duke, who resided at Notasulga, Alabama. Annice Ussery McDonald died in 1884 and is buried at Bethlehem Cemetery, Notasulga, Alabama.
