Mary Frances Barber

NEW ALBANY – Mary Frances Collins Barber, 95, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, at Sanctuary Hospice House. She was born July 17, 1917, in Myrtle to Henry Clay Collins and Marietta Bridges Collins.

A graduate of Myrtle High School and Blue Mountain College, she enjoyed a long career in education, first teaching at Wesson, Water Valley and Red Banks, where she met and married Walter Lee Barber in 1943. Later, she taught in Union County at Pinedale, Macedonia and Center. When her daughter, Virginia, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a physician advised that salty sea air would be beneficial. So, in 1957 the family moved to St. Simons Island, Ga., where she taught at St. Simons Elementary School. Returning to Union County in 1974, she taught second grade at West Union until retiring in 1982.

During her career, she found her true calling when she moved from teaching upper grades to teaching elementary grades. Teaching was more than a job to her; it was a joy. Her natural rapport and love for young children helped her be an effective teacher, and it left a lasting impression on all of her students. They fondly remember being rocked by "Mrs. Barber" in the schoolroom rocking chair.

After retirement, eager to experience other cultures of the world, she traveled widely, visiting Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the countries of Western Europe, as well as all 50 states. Among all her trips, a trip to China is the one she cherished most. Basketball was her sport. She played on the teams of Myrtle High School, Northwest Junior College and Blue Mountain College. Anytime an Ole Miss or Mississippi State basketball game was being broadcast on television, she was watching it. She enjoyed the friendships she made as a member of the Ishtehotopah Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution. No kindness ever shown her was left unacknowledged. Her cards of thanks were written lovingly, in her immaculate handwriting. Living in the house her grand father Will Bridges built in the 1880's, she put her talent for sewing to good use. Her specialty was making Christmas stockings, dozens of which she gave to family, friends and the children of the pastors of her church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter and her brother, William Collins.

She is survived by her son, Collins Lee Barber; her granddaughter, Natalie Barber Arteaga (Francisco); and her great-granddaughter, Adrianna Arteaga, all of Sanford, Fla. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Collins Goolsby of Memphis.

She was a devout Christian and a devoted member of Friendship United Methodist Church, where, through the years, she taught adult and children's Sunday School classes. Services will be at the church at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Pastor Jeff Tollison and former pastor Kyle Ivy have charge of the service. Visitation will be at United Funeral Service in New Albany from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to either Friendship UMC, 1689 State Road 30 W., Myrtle, MS 38650; Sanctuary Hospice House, 5159 West Main Street, Tupelo, MS 38803; or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, Suite 200, Bethesda, MD 20814.
