Oliver W. McClain the son of Samuel and Hester McClain was born in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, *January 11, 1844 and departed this life at his home in Wauseon, Saturday, October 15, 1921 at the age of *77 years, 9 months and 4 days.
During the Civil War he served in the military, doing what he could for his country.
At the close of the war he came to Fremont, Ohio, where he resided for some time. Here he was united in marriage to Rebecca Bowlus and to this union was born 10 children...Effa E., Margaret E., Sarah Elizabeth, Jennie, Ann, Hattie, Alma, Charley Wilson, William Nicholas, David Wesley, John Harrison, and Nora Cecil who together with a step daughter formed the family circle. This circle was broken by the death of Sarah Elizabeth, Effie E., Charley, Jennie, and his companion on October 5, 1904.
He was converted early in life and became a member of the Methodist Church. Later he transferred his membership to the United Brethern Church at Wauseon, of which he remained a faithful member until his death. He was an associated member of the G. A. R.
Leaving Fremont a few years after his marriage he and his wife came to Fulton County to make their future home locating on a farm in Pike Township, later purchasing a farm in Chesterfield Township, where he resided until moving to Wauseon.
Mr. McClain belongs to the pioneers and gave his support for the development of the county. He helped clear away the forests, drain the marshes, build improved roads and supported the public schools and the church.
On March 15, 1906 he was again united in marriage to Mrs. Louisa Evers of Delta, Ohio, and the same year came to Wauseon, where he has since resided, and where the children, grand children and great grand children of both have held many pleasant gatherings which will long be cherished as most pleasant memories. Always a mother's loving greeting and a father's joyous smile was extended and the cheery atmosphere of the home prevailed.
He leaves to mourn their loss his aged companion, four brothers, two sisters, six children, seven step children, 25 grand children, 11 great grand children, 27 step grand children and many relatives and friends.
The funeral services were held from the United Brethern Church conducted by his pastor, Rev C. P. Hopkins and interment made in Wauseon cemetery.
"Dearest father, lies I know
Pale and still and cold as snow,
And we say that he has fled,
He is numbered with the dead
Eyes are dim with falling tears
All are whispering sighs and prayers,
Yet could he but speak to us
He'd thus bid us love and trust
Cease your tears and let it lie
It was mine, but is not I
'Tis a tent which I am quitting,
'Tis a garment no more fitting.
