Sarah Jane Wood was born October 13, 1838 in Illinois. The forth of 13 children born to James McWilliams Wood and Rebecca (Conlee) Wood.

Her paternal grandparents were Richard Samuel Wood and Celica (Gregory) Wood.

Her maternal grandparents were Rev. Issac Conlee and Sarah "Sally" (McDonald) Conlee.

Sarah's twelve siblings include; Richard Wood, Isaac Wood, Celia G. "Seela" (Wood) Hairgrove, Allen Wood, Mary Ellen (Wood) Martin, Samuel Wood, Priscilla (Wood) Smith, James Fleming Wood, John William Wood, Rebecca Jean "Jennie" (Wood) Hutchinson and Hessa A. "Hessey" Wood.

Sarah married Thomas Jackson Baldwin August 30, 1855 in Sangamon county, Illinois. He was the son of Thomas Lee Baldwin and Nancy J. (Brizendine) Baldwin.
