Leo was born to parents Julius Beuerman and Dora (Kahle) Beuerman.

Leo was a little person with tremendous physical limitations. He was the subject of a 1969 short film directed by Gene Boomer. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.

Leo was unable to walk. He maneuvered around Lawrence in a handmade cart that he made himself. He brought the cart to town on a tractor that he had rigged with a series of chains and pulleys. He sold pencils and small objects in downtown Lawrence. He wanted to be self sufficient and help others in need.

A bronze plaque on a sidewalk in Lawrence reads:
"Remember Me, I'm that little Man gone blind. I used to sell Pencils on the street Corner"

Leo's autobiography is called, "Leo Beuerman: A Legacy"
