Wasilla resident Joseph William "Bill" Baxter, 68, died of heart complications, Sept. 22, 1997, at Providence Alaska Medical center. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Good Sheperd Lutheran Church, 501 E. Bogard Road, in Wasilla, with Pastor Duane Hansen officiating.
Mr. Baxter was born May 17, 1929, in Ogden, Utah, to William McKinley and Mary Finis Wright Baxter. He completed 12 years of education and served in the Utah National Guard. He and Elnor Lund were united in marriage on Dec 31, 1948. In Utah, Mr. Baxter worked from 1950 to 1952 for Western Auto, in 1952 for PIE, and from 1953 to 1964 for General Mills, all in Ogden. He worked from 1964 to 1970 for Hobart Manufacturing ni Clearfield, Utah, as a production control manager. Mr. Baxter and his wife came to Alaska in July 1970. From 1970 to 1972 he worked for Huskey Manufacturing and Fuqua Homes, Inc., in Palmer, and from 1973 to 1985 at Wasilla Middle School for the Mat-Su Borough Schools. He retired in November 1985. Mr. Baxter attended Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Wasilla, was a lifetime member of the Wasilla Senior Center and was a member of Amvets. He enjoyed family, hunting, fishing, bowling, pool, chocolate labradors, and travel to ll 50 states. His wife said, "His favorite occupation was the years working with youth at Wasilla Middle School. He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and uncle." Mr. Baxter was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Allene (Clinton) Driscoll and Joan (Heinz) Schuessler; stepmother, Wayve Baxter; and goddaughter, Barbara Aikens.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elnor, of Wasilla; daughters and sons-in-law, Lora Ann and Randy Bailey of Anchorage, and Cheryl Marie and Mark Gordon of Palmer; sons, William Brent and Wayne Leon of Anchorage; grandchildren, Jennifer, Matthew and Marissa, Sam Bailey and Ken Bailey' Sisters and brothers-in-law, Norma and Clifford Stratton of Riverdale, Utah, Karol and Morse Evans of Palmdale, Calif., and Gaylene and Don Goff of Clearfield, Utah; and 44 nephews and nieces. Memorial contributions may be made to Wasilla Area Seniors, 1301 Century Circle, Wasilla, 99654; Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Youth Groups, 501 East Bogard Road, Wasilla 99654, or a charity of choice. Arrangements were by Valley Funeral Home and Crematory of Wasilla.
