She graduated from the Franklin Academy (established in 1881 by the Congregational Church as college preparatory academy) in the town of Franklin, Nebraska. She graduated from Doane College in 1909. She married Elvin Royce Smith on July 2, 1912 in Upland at the home of her parents. After their marriage they took up residence in her parents' house in Upland.
