In 1869, he purchased in Cheshire, New Haven, Connecticut, 100 acres of land containg a dwelling, a barn and other buildings from John L. Humiston. He married Emily Royce on 03 July 1872 in Cheshire, New Haven, Connecticut. He and Emily moved to Butler County, Nebraska in 1875. Emily's older brother Philander had moved to Bulter county in 1870. In March of 1880, they purchased 80 acres in Butler county. In 1878, he purchase a half-share of a home in David City. In 1879, Emily's parents, Bennet Benham Roys and Julia Ann Benham, moved to David City and died the same year. In 1890, he moved to Franklin County, Nebraska. Elford died at home of his son Elvin Royce Smith in Upland, Franklin, Nebraska.
