Death of John H. Davenport – The Bishop Family's Travels
Waterville, Jan. 20 – John H. Davenport, a well known and esteemed resident of this place, died at his home on Bacon street yesterday. He had been ill about nine weeks with a complication. He was born in Brooklyn 59 years ago and came to Waterville about 40 years ago, when the Waterville Hop Extract Works was started, and he had since been in the company's employ. He assisted in the construction of the first factory of that company, as well as in enlarging the plant and served in the capacity of superintendent and chief enbineer[sic]. Since the works shut down he had control of the property of the company. He was a skilled and competent engineer and machinist, genial man, kind hearted and generous and in his family a devoted husband and father. About 36 years ago he married Amy Ryan of this village, who survives, together with six children, Harriet and Winifred Davenport of New York; Mrs. John Bartel, Clinton; Mrs. William Landers, Earlville; Mary and John Davenport of this village. Two sons, frank and William died within past year. The funeral will be held from St. Bernard's Church Monday morning at ten o'clock.
