John Hagaman was born December 25, 1851 in Jackson County, Ohio. He was the son of John and Sarah Hagaman. He and his family lived on a farm in Ohio. When he was a young man he did steamboating on the Ohio River and lumbering in the forests of Louisiana.

He came to Marshall County, Illinois in about 1877 and a short time later settled in Chatsworth. On March 10, 1880, he was united in marriage with Margaret S. Halferty Bagley. They had two daughters, Blanche who married James R Melvin and Margaret who married W. G. Andrews.

On April 20, 1883 his wife Margaret died at the age of 33 in Chatsworth Illinois. He then married Emma M. Carver on December 24, 1887. They had four daughters, Jane, Lotta, Sarah and Viola. Lottie, Sarah and Viola were all killed in an automobile accident west of Chatsworth, on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1914.

He lived in Wisconsin for several years where his wife Emma died October 29, 1933. John Hagaman died on a Sunday morning at the age of 90 years, 5 months and six days. He lived his last years with his daughters.
