Mr. T.J. Chappelear informed us on Thursday morning, that he had received word from Mr. Joseph Murphey of near Chesterhill, that Mrs. Murphey's condition was such that hope of recovery had been abandoned and family, friends and neighbors were simply waiting the end.

Mrs. Murphey was a Chappelear, a daughter of Mr. William Chappelear and sister of G.J. Chappelear's, but probably more generally known as Johnson Chappelear.

The sorrows and afflictions that have come to Mr. Joseph Murphey's family, Mr. Murphey being a brother of Isaac and Augustus Murphey, of Union, are of a most pathetic nature. First, Mr. Murphey's son Clinton died of typhoid fever a few months ago. Then his son-in-law, Chester Smith, moved into the home and took the place of the son, but only took sick and died from the same disease, and now Mrs. Smith, the daughter, is seriously ill with the same disease and it is believed she cannot recover, while the mother is in the condition already stated. (September 15, 1900, Morgan County Herald).

Note: Rachel Chappelear Murphey succombed to typhoid fever three days after this news article was published. Her daughter mentioned in this article as being critical, Carrie Murphey Smith, recovered.

Memorial presented and maintained in conjunction with Murphy Nation, a multi-generational family history gateway dedicated to celebrating, documenting, preserving and providing increased awareness and access for the Murphy family pioneers of Morgan County, Ohio and their descendants and families.
