Bob Allen, age 93, passed away October 13 2009 after a long full life.

Born in Vinita, Oklahoma, Bob arrived by train in Imperial Valley at 5 months old. During his early 20's he served as a forest ranger fire lookout in Big Sur California. In 1940, he became interested in bees. Julian Ashurst, his uncle by marriage, showed him the ropes of beekeeping and Bob traded his Model T Ford to Julian for his first 50 colonies of bees. That same year, he and his wife Lorraine, started Allen Honey Company. At one point, Bob had as many as 5000 colonies and produced up to 500 barrels of honey. Bob continued to work with the bees until the day he died. One only needed to look into his eyes to see the joy when spoke of his life's work. Since then, most of his sons and grandsons have continued in the family business of beekeeping.

His other true passion was his horses and cattle and his ranch, "Flying A Ranch" in Westmorland California, where at one time he had 500 head of cattle. This was the family home, where Bob and Lorraine raised their three sons and three daughters. For ten years, Bob and Lorraine also owned and operated the Mount Laguna stables. Bob taught his and many other families how to ride and care for the horses he loved so much. He loved attending the horse auctions and competing in rodeos; his main event was team calf roping.

Bob was a Christian man and was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lorraine and son, Tommy.

He will be greatly missed by his surviving children, Sandra and husband, George, Keith, Johnny and wife, Mary An, Ruthie and husband, Ralf, and Karen; and his 18 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Pioneers Memorial Hosptial.

Graveside services will be held Monday, October 19, 2009 at 10 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery.
