Mamie was the only surviving child of Frank Mitchell and Catherine Halpin of Ireland. Mary's father, Francis "Frank" D. Mitchell, Sr. was the son of Mary Fife Torere. Mary's mother Catherine Ann Halpin (1837-1883) was the daughter of Michael Halpin and Rose Downey (b. 1803). Her mother died circa 1883 and her father remarried and had a son named Francis Patrick Mitchell. Mamie married Alexander L. Reifel on January 1, 1891 in Galveston, Texas.
