Elizabeth Hayden Hunt Lowry passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 22, 2001. She was born in Tulsa OK March 10, 1919, the daughter of Judge Albert C Hunt and Essie Hayden. She moved to OKC where her father served as a Supremem Court Judge for the state of Oklahoma.
She attended Pine Manor College and graduated from Oklahoma University with a bachelors degree. Hayden married Dr Dick M Lowry Jr March 26, 1942. During the war she worked at Douglas Aircraft as a DC-3 expediter. She was the enthusiatic mother of four children, Dick III, Julie Hayden, Junie and Hunt.
In 1943 she joined the Junior League and served as its president in 1955-56. Hayden was active in the Keyes Speech and Hearing Clinic. She was also a member of the Oklahoma County Medical Auxiliary, a board member of the Visiting Nurses Association and served as chairman of the Wesley House Board for three years. Hayden worked with World Neighbors and was a member of the Neighborhood Services Board. She was a supporting member of the Junior League for 54 years and in 1999 received the Mary Baker Rumsey Lifetime Committment Award. Hayden was a contributing member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority where she received her 50-year pin for loyalty and service. She was also a member of the Oklahoma Society of Colonial Dames. She was a loyal and devout member of St Luke's Methodist Church for over 70 years. As a child she considered the capitol building and St Luke's as the two most important places besides home.
Hayden's proudest professional accomplish-ment was her volunteer work with the Payne Education Center. In 1962 after learning that her youngest son, Hunt, had dyslexia, inspired by the teachers that helped her son, and seeing a need for more teachers, Hayden poored herself into learning alphebetic phonics and brought the training to OKC to help other children. She was in the first class of teachers trained to teach Alphabetic Phonics in Oklahoma. The accomplishments of her students were her greatest source of professional pride. She was a charter member of the Payne Education Center which was established in 1984 and in 1995 was honored for years of service. She was a member of the National Orten Dyslexia Society and attended international conferences on dyslexia.
Hayden's devotion to her husband and family was obvious to anyone who knew her. Her family life was her true passion and she participated in every aspect of her husband's and children's lives. Though Hayden's lateness was legendary, she always had more than enough time for family and friends. Hayden will be missed by them all.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dr Dick Moss Lowry Jr; her children, Dick III and his wife, Patricia of Los Angeles; Julie Hayden and her husband, Howard Taylor of Sanford NC; Junie and her husband, William Johnson of Los Angeles; Hunt and his wife, Christine of Los Angeles; she is also survived by her brothr, John Hunt of Atlanta; sister-in-law, Jacqueline, widow of AC Hunt; and 10 grandchildren (names omitted).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Elizabeth Hayden Hunt Endowment Fund of Payne Education Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at St Luke's Methodist Church.
