There are different birthdates given for Alfred Roy Caine, son of Cornelius and Melissa Jane (Hays/Hayes) Caine. The 1901 census of him and his family in Cornwall, Ontario, says he was born 7 September 1887 but these dates given here for the family, although specific, prove surprisingly unreliable. On his World War I draft registration card he gave his birthdate as 5 September 1888 and his birthplace as Toronto, Canada. Burial records say 6 September 1888. Until his actual birth record can be discovered, the WWI draft card seems to be the most reliable source.

The family had settled in Cornwall by 1901, where his father worked as a teamster, but by 1909 Alfred was 21 and living back in Toronto and working for "the Ice company." On 14 August 1909 he was married there to Anna Margarete Curry (age 18, daughter of James Curry and Hannah Marks) by James G. Potter, Church of England. Alfred immigrated to the U.S. circa 1909 (1925 NY census) or 1910 (1920 census), and by 1916 was living at 209 Kellogg Street and working as a "driver" in Syracuse, New York. In 1917 he was working for the People's Ice Company as an "iceman." When he registered for the draft on 5 June 1917 he described himself as single and claimed no dependents. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in Syracuse on 16 December 1917.

Just before being sent overseas, in February 1918, he married Anna Theresa Lipke, age 21, a German-born girl working as a maid on East Genesee Street. Alfred served overseas from March 28, 1918 to January 24, 1919 with Battery C of the 59th Artillery, and was honorably discharged. Returning to Syracuse, he and Anna lived at 104 Standart Street and Alfred worked as a foreman for the People's Ice Company (1000 North State Street at East Division Street). In 1919 they had a daughter, Dorothy.

The family lived at 1409 Lodi Street (1921), 220-1/2 Lilac (1922), 114 Rosewood (1923), and in 1924-25 they lived in Oswego, New York (244 West Seneca Street) where Alfred worked as a chauffeur. At some point Alfred separated from Anna and Dorothy. He continued to live in Syracuse and work as a chauffeur/driver.
