Col. Harold L. Coleman, 82, of Clemmons, N.C., died Thursday, April 12, 2007, at his home.
He was born June 16, 1924, in Wayne County, Mich., to Venus York and Gaither Melvin
Coleman. He was raised in Clayton by his grandparents. He graduated from Toccoa Falls High
School and attended McKenzie Business College in Chattanooga, Tenn. He served in the U.S.
Naval Aviation during World War II and was a gun air school instructor and link trainer. He was
the owner and operator of the original franchise, Coleman's Take Home Kentucky Fried
Chicken, from 1962-1984 and the original franchise for Wendy's, both in Forsyth County, and
the original franchise for H. Salt Fish & Chips. He was a member of Salem Lodge No. 289 and
was a Master Mason. He also was a member of Oasis Temple of the Shrine-York Rite and a
member of the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Shrine Club. He was an Honorable Kentucky Colonel,
which was awarded to him from the governor through Col. Harland Sanders. He was a
Tennessee Squire under the Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg, Tenn. He was owner of
several world champion Tennessee walking horses. He was a member of Fairview Moravian
Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Hazel Burris Coleman of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Debra
Coleman of Clemmons and Shelbyville, Tenn., and Dianne C. Yarbrough of Bethabara, N.C.; a
son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Jan Coleman of Little River, S.C.; five grandchildren,
Richard and Amy Yarbrough, Crissy and Anastasia Coleman and Stephanie Wall Priddy; seven
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service was held Tuesday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons with the
Revs. Reddick Webber and Norwood Green officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to
the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1132, Fairfax, VA 22038-1132; or the Shriners'
Hospital for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607-1460.
