Five years later in the state census, still at Melrose, the family was all back together. The two newest additions were daughters, Nancy and Agenoria. Mr. Hobby was employed as an ornamentor.
By 1860 the Hobbys had arrived here in the town of Gardner. William senior and junior were recorded as farmers.
In the 1865 census sons, William, Jr. and John, were no longer under their parents' roof. Both were veterans of the Civil War that had just ended. Daughters, Agnes, 21, and Mary, 16, were both employed adding seats to chairs. They were called chair seaters in the census.
Listed at the Hobby house in 1870 were only William, 57, Agnes, 54, and their two youngest children, Nancy, 17, a chair seater, and Agenoria, 15. William continued farming.
Sadly, in July of 1879 the Hobbys lost their eldest daughter, Agnes (Hobby) Clapp. Nine months later her husband, Joseph Clapp, passed away. One of the couple's children, Ada, age 9, was living with Agnes' parents in 1880. Also staying with Mr. and Mrs. Hobby at that moment in time was another grandchild, William Phelps, who was eleven years old. A teenage boarder named Joseph Powers, 15, was also counted by the census taker at the home.
