Death of an Estimable Woman

The people of Columbia were not surprised last Monday afternoon when the announcement came, "Mrs. Kate Atkins is dead." The end came at 3 o'clock and while it was generally known that her condition was critical, many of her relatives and friends could not realize that she was dead.

She was the daughter of James and Kittie Turner and was born and reared near Milltown, this county, and when death came she was fifty five years old. When quite a young woman she was married to Mr. W.J. Atkins, with whom she lived happily until his death, which occurred about two years ago. Besides a host of relatives and friends she leaves five sons, all grown but one, all being by her bedside but James...who is in Dakota.

Early in life the deceased confessed her Savior, united with the Presbyterian Church, and was a consistent Christian until removed by death.

She was a victim of heart trouble. In health, she was ever ready to administer to the sick, and was one of the kindest women the neighborhood ever knew.

The funeral services, conducted by Rev. W.C. Clemens, assisted by Rev. J.P. Scruggs, were held at the residence Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and the interment was in the family burying ground, on the farm of Mr. W. B. Rowe. Many attended the last scene, manifesting the deepest sorrow and extending the hand of sympathy to the surviving loved ones.

Atkins Cemetery has been reinterred at Haven Hill.
