As a youth, Dock worked as a farm hand. As an adult, he worked as a machine operator. His first wife and mother of his children, Clara L. (Elliott) Thedford passed away in 1944, leaving him with six sons to raise alone. In order to try and give them a better life, he made the difficult decision to place one son for adoption and the older sons in state custody.

At the time of Dock's death, five sons were still living: Carl E., of Ennis, TX; Hugh D., of Fort Worth; Henry H., of Syracuse, New York; Ray R., of Fort Worth, and Edward L., of Wichita Falls, Texas. There were also six grandchildren; five of them were living in Syracuse, New York. He died of stomach cancer.
