Beginning a number of years ago, a young woman, Kathy Conwell, collected angels to put on a special Christmas tree she had at home. Kathy was a lovely young woman, a college student who learned that she had a very violent aggressive form of cancer. She had been told that she would not live long but that medical science would do everything it could to assist her, and she also received several blessings. Her collection eventually grew to 156 angels, covering a six-foot tree with lights and these special decorations. Kathy and her mother, Joy Conwell, would go to yard sales, post-Christmas sales, and anywhere little angels could be located. At her untimely death in October 1996, she asked her mother to distribute these angels to her friends. I was blessed to receive one of them. I have kept it in my office now for more than 400 days. She is now an angel herself. Her generosity goes on blessing us all.

At the last Conference in Phoenix, the young woman who ran the elections noticed a lump on her neck. Many encouraged her to have it checked. When she did, she found out that she had cancer. She was "called home" not long after.
This Conference her family is here and her mother is running the elections. It's part of their way to remember their daughter.
Kathy Conwell was known for attending these conferences, for attending many conferences. A former Central Region representative herself, she had been very active in helping with this type of event.
In honor of this, for the first time ever, this conference named a recipient of the Kathy Conwell Super Youth Staff Award, to both honor her memory and to recognize those youth who serve on staff at events like this so that others can come just to enjoy them.
This year's recipient has been responsible for a lot of fun at this conference, he was responsible for special activities and kept dances and other activities going to keep the participants happy and involved. We're proud to recognize Brandon Fitch, Chair of Special Programs, as the first recipient of the Kathy Conwell Super Youth Staff Award.

She was involved in the Exploring Program in the Trapper Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America, in Ogden. She was a member of Lambda Delta Sigma Sorority, Kappa Tau Chapter, and Phi Beta Theta National Honor Fraternity, Weber State Institute Chorus and Public Relations Council, and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She had served as the visiting teacher coordinator of Weber State Institute Sixth Ward and as a staff member of Nauvoo (Illinois) Stake Young Women's Camp.
Her honors and awards include National Explorer Leadership Award, Boy Scouts of America, 1994; Gold Award of Girl Scouts of the United States of America; Who's Who in American High School Students, 1992 and 1993; Iowa's Governor's Youth Leadership Award, 1991; Silver Volunteer Award, Midwest Old Settlers and Threshers Association, 1993; and the Young Womanhood Recognition Award, her church's youth award, 1993. In 1993 she was selected by the Boy Scouts of America to present Scouting's Report to the Nation to President Bill Clinton. In 1989, she was a delegate to the first National Children's Day in Washington, D.C. She served as a page in the 74th Session of the Iowa House of Representatives and was active in many clubs and organizations, including Explorer Post 1846 and Post 911, Iowa Model Legislature, Girl Scout Troop 199, and was a D.A.R.E. peer speaker and adviser.
Survivors include her parents of Atlantic; one brother, Edward E. Conwell Jr. of Ogden, Utah; her grandparents, Miriam Louise Ferguson of Mount Pleasant and Edward B. and Edith M. Conwell of Kansas City, Kansas; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather.
