The Humboldt Beacon:
Another one of Fortuna's aged citizens passed away to his final reward Wednesday night at ten o'clock. The spirit which had inhabited the body of G. W. Wise winged its flight upward, and this afternoon all that remains of a once vigorous man will be consigned to its last resting place beside the body of its soul mate in the family burial plot in the Newburg cemetery. The death of Mr. Wise was not unexpected, in fact it has been expected daily for the past several weeks. For the last two years he has been gradually failing and Wednesday night the end came peacefully, due to heart failure and paralysis. Mr. Wise was an old soldier, having served his country honorably thruout the Civil war, his regiment the 35th Iowa Infantry taking part in many decisive battles. The G.A.R. Circle and Post will have charge of the services over the body of their late comrade. George Washington Wise at the time of his death was 78 years, 3 months and 4 days old, having been born April 9, 1832 at Syracuse, Ohio. In February 1900 he married for the third time and in November 1901, he moved to this country residing here ever since. Just eleven months ago to a day his wife Sarah Wise passed to the beyond and lies buried in the Newburg cemetery. At 2 o'clock this afternoon the funeral services will be held at the house and his body laid to rest beside the one who has gone before. Deceased leaves to mourn his death, a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Dawson of Portland, Ore., three brothers, James Wise of Dow City, Iowa, Isaac K. Wise of Blairstown, Iowa and F. H. Wise of Junction, Iowa; five daughters, Mrs. E. W. Haight and Miss Bernice Wise of Fortuna, Mrs. I. C. Arthur of Petaluma, Mrs. Gertie Geary of Berkeley and Mrs. Caddie Tucker of Kendall, Montana; and one son, Robt. G. Wise of Fortuna. Mrs. Haight and her daughter, Mrs. Rima Wellock are now in the south for the health and will not be able to arrive in time for the funeral.
