Born October 7, 1919 in Dry Fork (Mountain Dell), Utah to George Ova and Elizabeth Maud Orgill Massey, Arthella had three older brothers and three younger. Growing up on a farm was a constant challenge. She had to be a roughneck to hold her own with the boys and yet was expected to be a feminine girl by her parents.
Arthella's early education was in Jensen schools. She rode a bus to high school until the family moved to Vernal. During her early years she was active in the LDS Primary and Mutual.
During World War II, Arthella worked with the U.S. Government in the PX supervising a group of workers. While she was working there she met her first husband, Robert Newcomb. After divorcing Robert she met and married Donald Richard Pierson. When their first two children were small they moved to Vernal, Utah to try country life, but it didn't work out for them so they moved to California.
The marriage to Richard ended in divorce. Arthella remained in Los Angeles, California and had been working for the Litchford Glass Company for a number of years. She had planned to remain in California, at least until retirement.
