Samuel first married Ellen Mann at her parents' home in Jerico, Cedar, MO on Sept. 8, 1884. She passed away before 1890. They had 3 children, Lucy, Lillian, & Stone. S.S. then married Sarah Elizabeth (Terry) Franklin in July of 1890 at the home of her parents in Cedar Co., MO. Their children were Grace, Raymond, Ruby, & Golda.
Samuel was my great grandfather & his siblings were: Robert, Ann, William (m. Sarah Jane Griggs), Absolem (only on 1860 census), Abner, John, Virginia, Elizabeth, & J. Stone.

Samuel Sanford Butner was born in Madison County, Kentucky Dec. 15, 1853, and died at Winona, Mo., April 10, 1915, age 62 years, 3 months and 10 days.
His first marriage was to Ellen Mann of Cedar County, Mo.. To this union there was born 3 children, Mrs. W.M. Hammer of Osawatomie, Kas., Mrs. C.L. Adams of Peru, Kas., and Mr. Stone Butner of Joseph, Oregon. His second marriage was to Mrs. S.E. Franklin of Cedar Co., Mo., in 1890. To this union was born 5 children, four of which are still living.
He leaves a wife and 9 children, 2 of which are step-children, an aged mother and 3 brothers, as well as a host of friends to mourn his loss.
While the deceased never made an open confession of Christianity, yet his daily life would lead all who know him to believe he was leading a Christian life.
In the community in which he lived he has always been held in the highest esteem as a man of sterling honesty and a disposition to live up to the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would that others do unto you."
To his family he was always devoted, exhibiting the greatest parental love for his children and unquestionable devotion to his wife.
