John Harold Elsey, age 92, Bridgeport, WV departed this life on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010 at the United Hospital Center, Clarksburg following a brief illness. He was born in Clarksburg, WV on July 14, 1918, a son of the late Rutherford Elsey and Mattie Spencer [*Spicer] (McCutchan) Elsey. Surviving are his wife, June (Zinn) Elsey, one son John T. (Tom) Elsey, a daughter-in-law; two granddaughters, and several nieces and a nephew. Mr. Elsey was also preceded in death by a brother, Harry Elsey and two sisters, Mrs. Betty Hennigan and Mrs. Fern Jamison. He was a 1936 graduate of Washington Irving High School, a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College and the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy. Mr. Elsey owned and operated the former Smith's Pharmacy in Goff Plaza for many years. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a navigator on B-24 type aircraft. Flying missions from India to China. He flew in 57 combat missions with a total of 427 combat hours. Mr. Elsey was an avid tennis player for over 70 years, having been named Harrison County's leading tennis player many times. He was named by West Virginia Wesleyan College as one of the All Time Tennis Players in West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He loved to play pool, table tennis and enjoyed watching the WVU Mountaineers, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers. While living in Clarksburg, John was an active member of the Broad Oaks United Methodist Church. Upon moving to Maplewood Retirement Community, he joined the Bridgeport United Methodist Church. Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, Clarksburg. Interment will be in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens with full military rites accorded by the Harrison County Honor Guard and the WV Army National Guard.
