Joe William Buboltz was born on Jan. 27, 1919, the son of Herman William and Mary (Dolch) Buboltz on the family farm southeast of Lewis where he resided his entire life until entering the Griswold Care Center in June, 2007. He attended country school in Bear Grove Township through the eighth grade and graduated from Lewis High School in 1936. He married Mildred Frances Armstrong, his high school sweetheart on May 29, 1940, at the Catholic Church rectory in Red Oak. In addition to being a lifelong farmer, Joe enjoyed helping his neighbors, family and friends. His mechanical skills were put to good use fixing machinery, motors, cars, and electrical problems, and just about anything else. He also did well drilling and custom baling.
Joe loved to visit with just about everyone. Going for a Sunday afternoon drive, looking at the crops, and dropping in on relatives was something he loved to do. Any conversation with Joe was not complete if the weather was not discussed. Joe enjoyed raising watermelons, and giving them away to family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred of Lewis, his six children, Joan Jones (Kevon) of Ames, Bernard (Bernita) Buboltz of Lewis, Jean Walsh (Kevin) of Duluth, Minn., Carol Jesperson (Mark Clark), David (Marcia) Buboltz, and Gary (Cindy) Buboltz, all of Lewis, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Matt Jones (Steffi), and children, Joshua and Friday; Jennifer Kelven (Drew) and daughters Solveig and Lena, Rebecca Davis (Phil) and children Colin and Maura; Shawn and Christy Jesperson, Joe, Emily, Elize and Micah Walsh; Roger Buboltz (Amber) and sons Jared and Tyler; Karen Stetzel (Koby) and daughter Kaylee; Michelle and Aaron Buboltz and step-grandson, Jeff (Paige) Cloughly. Also surviving are his brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lyle and Letha Armstrong and Glendale Armstrong, all of Atlantic.
His parents, Herman and Mary Buboltz and brother-in-law, Gail Armstrong preceeded Joe in death.
Funeral Mass for Joe will be held on Friday, April 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Griswold, with Fr. Dean Nimerichter celebrant.
