Faye A Nelson, of Rhinelander, WI and Mt. Pleasant, SC, died on May 14th, 2010 at the Alice Haus in Rhinelander.

Faye was born on December 26, 1927, in Lebanon, PA, the daughter of Dr. Robert and Margaret Abernethy. Her childhood and teen-age years were spent in Lebanon, Harrisburg and Ardmore, PA. After graduating from Haverford Township High School (where she was the valedictorian of her class), she entered Vassar College, achieving a BA degree in Zoology in 1949.

In 1949, Faye married Colonel Robert C Nelson, upon his graduation as a Lieutenant from West Point, and accompanied him on his many assignments throughout the world.

Before, and after her marriage to Colonel Nelson, Faye worked in a variety of fields. While in high school, and at Vassar, she worked summers doing research at American Viscose Corp. and a number of other firms translating German technical papers into English. In the 1970's she started her career in speech pathology, working most of her time for the Charleston County, South Carolina, School System. She retired in 1991 after 19 years of teaching.

She loved to swim, play tennis and golf. A lover of books, she was an active member of book and study clubs in Mt. Pleasant, SC and Rhinelander, WI. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Rhinelander. She loved to sing and was an alto in the church choir.

Surviving are her beloved husband Bob of Rhinelander, her son Professor David Nelson of Harvard University, Lexington, MA, her daughter Leslie Jarrow of Stuttgart, Germany and her five grandchildren; Meredith, Chris, Peter, Jonathon and Joanna.

A visitation for Faye will be held on Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 from 4-7 PM at the Carlson Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the First Congregational Untied Church of Christ in Rhinelander. The Carlson Funeral Home is handling the arrangements for the Nelson family.
