World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. He received the award from British King George V at Buckingham Palace in London, England on July 12, 1915 for his actions as a lance corporal in the 24th (County of London) Battalion, The Queen's London Regiment of the British Army on 25-26 May 1915 at Givenchy, France during World War I. Born in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England his father was a tailor where he worked after his education at the Technical School on Lincoln. He then became a clerk with Messrs Burton, Scorers, and White and was working there when World War I erupted in July 1914. The following month he enlisted in the Queen's London Regiment and was sent to the Western Front in France in April 1915 and saw combat action the following month at the Battle of Aubers Ridge and then at Givenchy. The following October he was killed in combat near Abbeville, France at the age of 22. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "For most conspicuous bravery at Givenchy on the night of 25-26th May, 1915. After the assault on the German position by the 24th Battalion, London Regt, efforts were made by that Unit to follow up their success by a bomb attack, during the progress of which 58 men out of a total 75 became casualties. During this very fierce encounter Lance-Cpl Keyworth stood fully exposed for 2 hours on the top of the enemy's parapet, and threw about 150 bombs amongst the Germans, who were only a few yards away." He was also awarded the Russian Medal of St. George (2nd class), the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. His Victoria Cross and other medals were donated to the Queen's Royal Surrey Regimental Museum at Clandon House in Guildford, Surrey, England.
