Charles was born in Effingham Illinois, the son of Francis 'Frank' Xavier Brenke & Frederika Josephine 'Freda' Gundlach both born in Germany. At a young age his family moved from Effingham Ill., to Pine Bluff Arkansas, where he worked for the Cotton Belt Railroad.
He served in World War I, a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, He was active in many phases of Boy Scouting and was a troop leader for seven years.

He married Annie Kate Thornhill November 23, 1920 in Pine Bluff AR. Charles moved his family to Hattiesburg about 40 years ago, where he worked for the Mississippi Central Railroad as a switchman, retiring in 1963.

Charles & Annie Kate are the parents of two sons Charles G. Jr. Brenke, and Edward Brenke; and three daughters; Dorothy B. Scheppelman, Evelyn B. Smith and Jean B. Roseberry.
