E W 'Johnny' Lockard, 100, of Flatwoods, WV, died June 22, 2005, at his home.

He was born at Exchange, WV, on May 30, 1905, the son of the late James Thomas and Lydia McNemar Lockard.

Also preceding him in death were his wife, Hattie Lockard; his son, Jerry Lockard; two brothers and four sisters.

Johnny moved to Flatwoods in 1921, starting several business ventures, including a restaurant, blacksmith shop, a filling station and a grocery and dry-goods store. In 1949, he started what was Lockard's Farm and Home Supply, selling John Deere farm equipment. Mr. Lockard was very dedicated to the Flatwoods community and enjoyed helping it prosper. He was instrumental in putting the sign at the interchange of I-79 Flatwoods Exit that reads "Flatwoods, Geographical Center of West Virginia."

He is survived by one son, Max (Mary Helen) Lockard of Flatwoods; and one daughter Betty J (W E) Sumpter of Apopka, FL. Also surviving are six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton, WV, with the Rev. Barbara Acord officiating. Burial will be in Morrison Church Cemetery,
