John R McClain, SSgt (Ret), 85, of Terre Haute, passed away Apr. 9, 2012, at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born in Tonopah, Nev., on Jan. 28 1927, to Shelton and Ambrosia (Peterson) McClain. They have preceded him in death.
He proudly served his country for a total of 27 years; the U.S. Marine Corps for 7 years and the U.S. Army, 1st Calvary Division, for 20 years, before retiring. He was a veteran of World War II, The Korean War and Vietnam War. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972.
His survivors include his wife, Joann (Montague) McClain, whom he married on Mar. 30, 1977; a daughter, Gail Yvonne Miller; two stepdaughters, Jackie Ann Waltermire and Angela Rea Wilson; four sisters, Elizabeth Norman, Josephine Hilderbrand, Cecelia Stewart, and Edna Smith; grandchildren, Kali Waltermire, David Hagan II, Stacy Britton, Vernon John and Crystal; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Britton and Conner Britton; and several nieces and nephews.
John also was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Jane Vernon; and a sister, Emily Young.
Funeral services will be 1 pm Thursday, in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E Springhill Dr. with Dr. Thomas Manbeck officiating. Friends may call from 11 am until service time Thursday. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, with VFW Post 972 conducting graveside military rites.
