John Schoen
1909-2005
John Schoen, 96, a long-time Gurley resident, died Friday evening, Dec. 23, 2005 at Memorial Health Center in Sidney.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 29 in Grace Lutheran Church in Gurley with Rev. H. Eldin Wells officiating. Interment will following in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family to be present from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.
A memorial has been established.
John A. Schoen was born on May 9, 1909 in Gladstone, the son of Gottlieb and Emily Schoen. He grew up and received his education in Gladstone.
On May 18, 1930 he was united in marriage to Florence Mary REgnier in Lincoln. In 1931 they moved to a farm in Gurley where they made their home. He owned and operated the school bus for the Gurley School until selling his business in 1949. They continued to farm until retiring. John moved in to Sloan Estates in April of 2001.
John was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where he was active with the church council and choir; member of the Antique Car Club; Wheat Growers Associaion and the Elks Club.
Survivors include his son, Burdette Schoen and his wife Florafae of Lincoln; one daughter, Eleanor "Ellie" Keller and her husband Melvin of Republican City; five grandchildren, Lynette Sorrentino of Gig Harbor, Wash., Trisha Crist of Pawnee City, Eric Schoen of Lincoln, Cathy Bailey of Newburg, Ore., and Diane Usher of Lincoln; six great-grandchildren, Cassie Marie Tucker of Pawnee City, Tanner Schoen Sorrentino of Gig Harbor, Maurelle "Ellie" Celeste Sorrentino of Gig Harbor, Taylon Schoen of Lincoln, Kari Bailey and Chauncey Bailey, both of Newburg; two step great grandchildren, Bryce Crist and Caitie Crist, both of Axtell; also several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Florence in 1999, his parents, a granddaughter, Jody Wolvin Meier in 1985, and a brother Ernest Schoen.
