Donald was born to Newby Lee and Ruth Pauline (Thompson) Carey. He graduated from Lapel High School in 1941 and went to work at Delco Remy. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korea and then returned to Delco Remy. He married a high school classmate, Marjoria Ruth Sheller on September 3, 1950. They had three daughters and one son.
After Marjoria died, he married his brother's widow, B. Mozelle (Skaggs) Carey on June 13, 1975. He was a member of Prairie Baptist Church in Hamilton County, Indiana.
