James A. Raymond was born on November 18, 1852, in Albany, New York, to Aaron M. and Sarah Bodine Raymond. He grew up alongside his siblings Mary, Nellie, Orietta, Calvin, and Myrtle. In 1860, the family lived in Fabius, Michigan.

In 1870, James was living in Hillsdale, Michigan, where he worked as a farm laborer. He married Sarah Hortense Bailey on November 27, 1872, in Jefferson, Michigan. The couple had five children together: Emma, Lena Gertrude, Mary Almeda, John Earl, and George LeRoy.

From 1880 until his death, James lived in Waverly Township, Michigan, where he worked as a farmer on a vegetable farm. Sadly, his daughter Lena Gertrude passed away in 1896, and his daughter Mary Almeda passed away in 1905.

James passed away on May 11, 1932, in Paw Paw, Michigan, at the age of 79. He was survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, and his memory lives on through his descendants.
