According to "The Shinkle Genealogy" by Louisa J. Appott and Charles L Abbott, published in 1897, William was a carpenter in Higginsport, Ohio and a coal merchant in Louisville, Kentucky.

He married Matilda Shinkle Williams 30 November 1842 (place unknown). It was a second marriage for both.

James L. Porter was the only known child by his first marriage.



∼On Nov. 10, 1842, William A. Porter married Matilda Shinkle, daughter of Peter Shinkle and Sarah Day. She was his second wife. The name of his first wife is unknown.
