A direct descendant of one of the first settlers of Massachusetts. In 1855 Carpenter moved to Minnesota and spent the next seven years building mills, moving to California in 1863 and winding up in San Francisco. He mined in Gold Hill, Nevada for a while and moved to Santa Monica in 1882 where he became a builder and a carpenter, building a number of houses in the area. In 1901 he became superintendent of streets and served as a member of the school board, later becoming the president. Santa Monica City Hall was built on the site of his home from which he moved and relocated to 334 Fifth Street with his wife Madeline, whom he married in 1862. Madeline rests next to him at Woodlawn.
